Stoke St Mary has a brass plaque in St Mary’s Church to remember the one soldier who was actually living in the Parish when the First World War started.
The other three were either born in Stoke or had lived there as children.

Thurlbear has a brass plaque on the wall in St Thomas’s church giving the names of all those who died who had lived in Thurlbear at some time or whose families still lived there.
Stoke St Mary and Thurlbear Parishes both lost men in the First World War.
It also names those who fought in the War and who returned.
